LEST WE FORGET

It was overcast this Remembrance Day in Chemainus and Ladysmith but fortunately no rain for the several hundred who attended the ceremonies in Chemainus. Over the last 10 years the crowds have increased substantially. During the Ceremony there was a fly past of vintage aircraft. This added more poignancy to the Ceremony.

The parade had members from RCMP, the Legion, Service Clubs, Chemainus Fire Brigade, Paramedics, youth organizations, Air Cadets and, of course, Veterans from various conflicts. Air Cadets provided the honour guard.

Many wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph in Chemainus as at the one in Ladysmith. Each person laying a wreath was escorted, by hand, by young people.

Debbie Neil and John Silins sponsored wreaths, on behalf of Saltair District Ratepayers Association, that were laid at the Ladysmith and Chemainus Cenotaphs, respectively.

Mel Dorey also laid the wreath at the Chemainus Cenotaph on behalf of Area G, Cowichan Valley Regional District.

The members of United Church, across Willow Street from the Cenotaph, served coffee after the Ceremony.

All in all it was a dignified Ceremony befitting the memory of those that who paid the highest price in the service of Canada.

Great Community Attendance 2016 Halloween Event

Over 200 residents of all ages attended the Annual Saltair Halloween Event.  It was wonderful to see new families enjoying the party. Many thanks go out our great group of volunteers (Tim and Janet Evans, Wendy, Cindy) who planned and organized such a fun evening. 12 pizzas, 15 dozen hotdogs, three large vats of hot chocolate,  90 juice boxes and 50 goodies bags were consumed. The concession ran out of food and had to be closed early!  Kudos go to Dave Key for providing us with a fantastic fireworks display!  Thank you to our costume parade entertainer, local resident witch, Judy!!  Congratulations to Zoe Platt, 1st place winner of the annual costume contest.  It was also, heart warming to see Saltair teens at the massive bonfire as well as  parents dressed in costumes!  Community spirit in Saltair is growing!!
